The A-10 Thunderbolt by Lueb-Art The A-10 Thunderbolt by Lueb-Art
Digitally painted with Wacom tablet & stylus using Corel Painter 12.

The A-10 Thunderbolt is also known as the Warthog, the 'flying gun' and the Tankbuster. The aircraft was used extensively during Operation Desert Storm, in support of Nato operations in response to the Kosovo crisis, in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The A-10 is a high-survivability and versatile aircraft, popular with pilots for the 'get home' effectiveness.

The mission of the aircraft is ground attack against tanks, armoured vehicles and installations, and close air support of ground forces.

The aircraft is suitable for operation from forward air bases, with short take-off and landing capability. The aircraft has a long range (800 miles), high endurance and can loiter in the battle area.

The manoeuvrability at low speed and low altitude (below 1,000ft) allows accurate and effective targeting and weapon delivery over all types of terrain.

If I didn't know the caliber and destructive force of the gun, I would laugh at the sound it makes.. Excelent work!

The plane is truly impressive, and IMO should have stayed in production. But like the B-52 which will probably fly a hundred years because of excellent maintenance and modifications, the existing A-10s will also be around as long as needed. Thank you.

did you draw the background too?

I painted the background. My reference was a photo of an F-15 Eagle in the same pose. I rendered a 3D model of an A-10 in the same angle of the Eagle and pasted my render into the proper location. I expanded the photo reference size to my desired resolution, then masked areas of the photo that I wanted to use to help with shape when painting. After making masks, I cleared the photo image but kept a reference photo on my Painter window as well to help match colors. Then I used the palette of the photo reference, painting in similar colors in my new canvas onto the plane and to the background, using the masks I made earlier to help with shape and line. The photo reference is similar, but at very low resolution, with a lot of JPEG noise in it, so naturally my painting would have to be a refinement of the reference and after adding more cloud here, less shadow here, etc., the two are quite different, one that looks like a noisy photograph, and the painting that appropriately looks painted, which it is. The art comes after completing the composition, using discretion to add highlights, refinements of shape, etc.

oh yeah I know which Strike Eagle you are talking about, I am very familiar with most of USAF jet photos. Here is your reference: [link] . ;)

That's it! You can notice some differences in the background from the painting, though when it's a great photo like that from the real world, I find little need to change much of the structure or color.
